Dr. Steve Joe is registered with the New Zealand Medical Council as a General Practitioner and is a member of the NZ College of General Practice. He practices “Integrative Medicine” the aim of which is to combine the strengths of conventional and complementary care. Another term for this is CAM - Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Steve studied, and uses, Applied Kinesiology in his practice. This is not a standard treatment method recognised by the Medical Council and is regarded as CAM.
Personal bio
Born and raised in Matamata, Dr. Steve Joe completed his medical degree at Auckland University. His early career was shaped by a passion for integrative care—a passion ignited during an acupuncture course shortly after graduation. With over 40 years of experience in general practice, during which he provided extensive obstetric care, Steve has seamlessly integrated complementary therapies into his practice. He is registered with the Medical Council as a GP. His approach is rooted in a deep commitment to understanding the complexity of patient illnesses and delivering personalised care that draws on the best of both conventional and complementary medicine.
In addition to his clinical work, Steve has pursued training in applied kinesiology. He has many areas of expertise which includes chronic fatigue, IBS, depression/anxiety, long COVID, autism, cancer and mould toxicity. Outside of medicine, he is a devoted family man, married with three adult children and four grandchildren. An active relaxer at heart, he enjoys mountain biking, tennis, golf, and traveling—interests that reflect his balanced approach to life and work.
Liz Templeton
Practice Manager
Liz Templeton joined Dr. Steve Joe Integrative Medicine in 2016, and since then, she has had the pleasure of meeting and working with a variety of patients. She truly enjoys building relationships and supporting them in their health and well-being journey.
Outside of work, Liz loves spending time with her family and exploring the great outdoors, always seeking new adventures.
Michelle Philburn

Michelle Philburn has had the pleasure of working with the incredible team at Dr. Steve Joe Integrative Medicine since 2022. It's been a rewarding experience for her to be part of such a collaborative and dedicated group, contributing to a holistic, patient-centered approach to healthcare.
When not at work, Michelle loves exploring the beauty of the country in her caravan, as well as staying active with walking and cycling. These hobbies allow her to unwind and recharge, ensuring she's always ready to give her best to her work and team.

Registered Nurse
Janella is a registered nurse and has been in the healthcare industry for ten years. She has worked in various fields from rehabilitation nursing to acute nursing and emergency nursing. She is deeply passionate and committed to delivering high quality care to patients.
With qualifications including Bachelor of Science in nursing, Post Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences; Clinical Practices and Specialty in Nursing, and Post Graduate Diploma; Leading and Managing Changes in Healthcare and Biological Science for Practice.
